1812 Overture, Op. 49
Composed 1880 · premiered 1882, Moscow
A musical battle commemorating Russia's defence against Napoleon in 1812.
The story behind it
It was commissioned for the Moscow Arts and Industry Exhibition and linked to the newly built Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.
Tchaikovsky himself thought little of it, but its cannon shots and bells made it hugely popular.
The French Marseillaise and the Russian imperial anthem battle in the music — though that anthem did not yet exist in 1812.
What to listen for
- The opening Russian hymn for cellos and violas.
- Cannons and church bells in the finale.
