Peer Gynt, Op. 23
Premiered 24 February 1876, Christiania (Oslo)
Incidental music for Ibsen's play, including “Morning Mood” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King”.
The story behind it
Henrik Ibsen asked Grieg to write music for the stage production of his verse play.
Grieg later drew two concert suites from it, which became far better known than the play.
It made him a symbol of Norwegian national music.
