The Planets, Op. 32
Composed 1914–1917 · first performed 1918, London
A seven-movement suite inspired by the astrological character of each planet.
The story behind it
Holst became interested in astrology through friends and wrote the suite during the First World War.
Its first, private performance in September 1918 was conducted by Adrian Boult.
“Mars, the Bringer of War” has influenced countless film scores.
What to listen for
- The relentless 5/4 rhythm of Mars.
- The wordless women's choir fading away at the end of Neptune.
